History of Lawrence Heights

Information taken from Toronto Community Housing’s Website

Located in North York, Lawrence Heights was the first large public housing neighbourhood built by Metropolitan Toronto and is now managed by Toronto Community Housing (TCHC).

Built in 1955, Lawrence Heights is home to 100 acres of land. At the time, the project would have approximately 6,000 residents in 1,081 family units at a density of 12 families per acre.

In 2007, plans for Lawrence Heights revitalization were announced.

The Lawrence Heights revitalization project entails replacing 1,208 TCHC units and building over 4,000 new market units, along with new parks, retail space, and roads connecting Lawrence Heights to the surrounding community. It is currently TCHC’s largest revitalization project.

In October 2015 demolition began, marking the beginning of the Lawrence Heights revitalization.

Lawrence Heights is at the end of Phase 1 of revitalization, with Phases 2 and 3 to shortly follow.
